    How long do you spend getting ready for a night out? At a guess I would say that if you’re a woman you can probably spend 1 hour upwards preening and titivating and if you’re a man you can be showered, shaved and out of the door within 20 minutes (unless, of course, you’re a metro-sexual in which case you probably take longer than a woman!).

    Now let me ask you how long you would spend (or have spent) writing a profile for an online dating site? Less than 5 minutes, possibly 10 minutes maximum?

    When you consider that you literally have minutes to impress someone and stand out from the rest in the online dating scene, don’t you agree that more time and effort should be put into writing an online profile?

    If you are an online dater, I’m sure you will agree with me that when you are searching for a partner online you will first of all look at the profiles with photos and, secondly, you will look at the profiles where people have taken the time to write something about themselves. So if you have no photo and/or an incomplete and uninformative profile, don’t be surprised if you inbox isn’t full to the brim with messages!

    I’m going to share a few tips with you to get you started writing an eye-catching profile. Once you’ve read them take some time to think about what you are going to write and jot down some quick notes before hitting the keyboard.

    Grab a friend

    If you don’t like writing about yourself or think you are going to get writer’s block it’s a good idea to enlist the help of a friend; the kind of friend who is always saying to you “I can’t understand why you’re still single, you’re such a catch”. Ask your friend what your star qualities are and he or she will come up with a million and one positive things about you which you would have never thought of or dared to say about yourself.

    Strike a pose

    The most effective way to get noticed online, is to include a photo. Choose a clear photo that shows in your best light and preferably smiling – it makes much better viewing!

    Choose a fun username

    This is the name which you will be known as by members on the dating site. I would advise you to use a name other than your real name to remain anonymous. Try and choose a name that is fun and reflects your personality, i.e. Sporty Sam or Disco Queen. Do not use a name which is sexually provocative or offensive.

    Captivate your audience

    Make your profile really stand out so that any person reading it will think “Wow, I have to get to know this person!”

    Online dating sites have made it easy for you when completing your profile by providing drop down menus for basic questions such as your appearance, lifestyle, hobbies but you will also be given additional space to write something yourself. Use this space wisely to provide a more detailed description about your personality, your interests and what you are looking for. The key is to be confident and talk positively about yourself without coming across bigheaded.

    Don’t leave an empty space

    If you feel you have covered everything by answering the profile questions – please do not leave the additional space blank or write “ask me”, “tell you later” or “I don’t know what to say”. Members will see your profile and think you’re either not serious about dating or that if you can’t be bothered to put some effort into writing a profile you will have the same approach in a relationship – effortless! Instead extend on the information already provided, for example, if you have stated you like travelling talk about some of the places you have visited.

    Ask questions

    If there is a particular place you visited and fell in love with, ask anyone who has been there to get in touch with you so you can reminisce together. Asking a question in your profile makes it easy for other members to respond to.

    Be Honest

    Don’t lie about interests; you will get found out! For example, don’t say you love long walks in the countryside if you really like to dance the night away in nightclubs every weekend. You’ll attract the wrong person and waste both of your time.

    As with any other kind of dating, it is always best to be honest from the start so answer all questions honestly and finding your perfect match will be much easier!

    Show your funny side

    I think if you can make someone laugh or someone makes you laugh, you’re on the path to a good relationship. Show people that you have a sense of humour, e.g. talk about a scene from one of your all time favourite comedies and you may strike a chord with someone else who found the same thing just as funny as you.

    Dream a little

    Ok, so you may have just come out of a relationship and be feeling sad and lonely but don’t write about it. It will put a lot of people off and you may come across desperate, which is not an attractive trait. Make online dating a new start for you and promise yourself not to dwell on past relationships.

    Your expectations

    What are your expectations from joining an online dating site? Tell people the kind of relationship you are hoping to find but don’t say you are looking for marriage if you are really looking for a casual fling and vice versa. Again, you will waste both of your time.

    Write a chapter, not a book

    By this I mean, don’t tell your whole life story in your profile. I encourage you to provide as much information as possible about yourself but use short bursts of information, sectioned by paragraphs, rather than writing a long essay so whoever is reading it is intrigued to find out more about you.

    Be safe

    Finally, do not include any personal information in your profile, e.g. your e-mail address, home address, work address or telephone number. A reputable dating site will remove any personal information before it appears live on site; this is to ensure that they provide you with a safe online dating environment.

    Once you’ve completed your profile, read through it or ask a trusted friend to read through it and ask, would you reply to this person? If yes, it’s all systems go. If no, look at the areas where it can be improved until you’ve created that winning profile. It may take longer than 5 or 10 minutes but the results that will show in your inbox will be worth it!

  2. Sharing My Knowledge on Vedanta – Mahavakyas

    Mahavakyas enable the seeker to arrive at the non-dual nature of the Self and put an end to the bondage by declaring the knowledge of the Atman and Brahman. The four mahavakyas can be interconnected.

    There are four Vedas and one statement from each Veda signifies each vakya (statement)

    Mahavakya Meaning Upanishad Veda

    1 Prajanam Brahma-Consciousness is Brahman-Aitreya Upanishad-Rg Veda

    2 Ahambrahmasmi-I am Brahman-Brahadaranyaka Upanishad-Yajur Veda

    3 Tat Tvam asi-That thou art-Chandogya Upanishad-Sama Veda

    4 Ayamatma Brahma-This Self is Brahman-Mandukya Upanishad-Atharvana Veda

    The concept of how the four Vedas are interconnected is explained by interlacing a beautiful story between a student and a vedantic teacher.

    The student, a vedantic disciple approaches the teacher and seeks to be taught about the ultimate Truth. The Guru defines the Truth – Prajanam Brahma (Consciousness is Brahman). This statement is called Laksana vakya, a statement of definition because it describes Brahman.

    The student gets a feeling that the Guru is referring Brahman as the Self but he always thought that the Brahman was different from him. So he goes back to the teacher for clarification.

    Guru now presents the statement ‘Tat Tvam asi’ (That thou art) and declares that the seeker is the sought! Since this statement is ‘teaching’ is Upadesa vakya -statement of instruction.

    The student now bestowed with the knowledge intellectually that ‘the Self is the non-dual’ focuses on mediation and with dispassion & discrimination, overcomes the belief that the body, mind and intellect are conditioning on the Self and directly experiences the Brahman -Aham brahmasmi (I am Brahman), anubhava vakya, a statement of experience.

    Once the student has realizes this state, the teacher advises him to revel and abide in this knowledge. This nature of abidance is ‘Ayam atma Brahma’- ‘This Self is Brahman’, is ‘anusandhana vakya’, ‘a statement of constant practice.’

    The student never loses sight of this experiential knowledge even when transacting with the world around him/her.

    This logical sequence provides a road map to listen(sravana), reflect (manana), contemplate (nidhidyasana), experience (samdhi)and stay on course (nistha) firmly.

  4. Evolution and Exorcisms

    EVOLUTION: More surprising to me as I consider where my intellectual head-space has been on this issue, which is central to theological ideal; is the fact that I have become more of a creationist. Skeptics may say that God doesn’t exist and I am inclined to agree he/she isn’t within our purview to limit and say we know; HIM, or even what it is that really goes on, in the world about us. It would be difficult to say there is any one humanistic discipline or theology that fits with my perception. Teilhard de Chardin’s ‘templates’ and ‘quantum many worlds’ join Lamarckian science, that requires uncertainty and values mystery and uncertainty principles with purpose. In the final analysis you can put me in whatever ‘cubby-hole’ you want and there’ll be agreement and respect for the truth therein expressed. I see a lot of people sounding like they disagree and yet I see little difference except when they seek personal gain by it. Surely science has given a great deal of support to the concept of consciousness existing in the very smallest parts of energy, and in the ways it performs what was once considered miraculous, or magical. Here are the thoughts of two very scientifically oriented people from MIT in a book called Darwinism Evolving:

    “They also made it harder for the scientific worldview to be received with equanimity by other sectors of culture. Indeed, since the reducing impulse undermines fairly huge tracts of experience, people like Wallace, who feel deeply about protecting phenomena they regard as existentially important, frequently conclude that they have no alternative except to embrace spiritualism, and sometimes even to attack the scientific worldview itself, if that is the only way to protect important spheres of experience that have been ejected from science’s confining Eden. In response, scientists and philosophers who feel strongly about the liberating potential of a spare, materialistic worldview began to patrol the borderlands between the high-grade knowledge scientists have of natural systems and the low-grade opinions that in the view of science’s most ardent defenders, dominate other spheres of culture and lead back toward the superstitious and authoritarian world of yesteryear. ‘Demarcating’ science from other, less cognitively worthwhile forms of understanding was already a major feature of Darwin’s world. A line beyond which the Newtonian paradigm could not apply was drawn at the boundary between physics and biology. We have seen how hesitant Darwin was to cross that line and what happened when he did. Twentieth-century people are sometimes prone to congratulate themselves for being above these quaint Victorian battles. They may have less reason to do so, however, than they think, for the fact is that throughout our own century, the same sort of battles, with emotional overtones no less charged, have been waged at the contested line where biology meets psychology, and more generally where the natural sciences confront the human sciences. Dualisms between spirit and matter, and even between mind and body, may have been pushed to the margins of respectable intellectual discourse. But methodological dualisms between what is covered by laws and what is to be ‘hermeneutically appropriated’ are still very much at the center of our cultural, or rather ‘two cultural’, life. Cognitive psychologists and neurophysiologists are even now busy reducing mind-states to brain-states, while interpretive or humanistic psychologists are proclaiming how meaningless the world would be if mind is nothing but brain. Interpretive anthropologists are filled with horror at what would disappear from the world if the rich cultural practices that seem to give meaning to our lives were to be shown to be little more than extremely sophisticated calculations on the part of self-interested genes. Conflicts of this sort would have given Darwin stomachaches almost as bad as the ones he endured over earlier demarcation controversies.

    The rhetorical pattern of these battles is still depressingly similar, in fact, to Huxley’s confrontation with Wilberforce. Hermeneuts ridicule scientists like Hamilton, Dawkins, and Wilson when they suggest that nothing was ever known about social cooperation until biologists discovered kin selection. Reductionists in turn criticize hermeneuts, now transformed largely into ‘culturists,’ for bringing back ghosts and gods, just as their nineteenth-century predecessors were taxed with being ‘vitalists’ every time they said something about the complexity of development. Humanists identify scientists with an outdated materialist reductionism. Scientists insist that hermeneutical intentionality is little more than disguised religion.

    Perhaps, a way out of this fruitless dialectic between the ‘two cultures’, can be found if each party could give up at least one of its cherished preconceptions {Or just give up the science that rejects certain facts in favour of convention or the ‘Toilet Philosophy’.}. It would be a good thing, for example, if heirs of the Enlightenment would stop thinking that if cultural phenomena are not reduced to some sort of mechanism; religious authoritarianism will immediately flood into the breach. They should also stop assuming that nothing is really known about human beings until the spirit of scientific reductionism gets to work. Students of the human sciences have, after all, been learning things alongside scientists ever since modernity began. Among the things they have learned are that humans are individuated persons within the bonds of culture and cultural roles, and that as recipients and transmitters of cultural meanings, they are bound together with others in ways no less meaningful and valuable than the ways promoted by strongly dualistic religions. By the same token, it would be helpful if advocates of the interpretive disciplines would abandon a tacit assumption sometimes found among them that nature is so constituted that it can never accomodate the rich and meaningful cultural phenomena humanists are dedicated to protecting, and that therefore cultural phenomena ‘ought never’ to be allowed to slip comfortably into naturalism. Humanists seem to have internalized this belief from their reductionist enemies, whose commitment to materialism is generally inseparable from their resolve to show up large parts of culture, especially religion, as illusions. These opponents, we may safely say, take in each other’s laundry.” (7)

    Ego and protecting territory abound in the internecine warfare that academics who seldom DO anything, often fight over. Meanwhile the real DOERS explore the boundless and awesome ‘waves of the marvellous’. (8) We should accept even the ridiculous possibilities that come to mind as having merit or avenues to understand, rather than constantly fighting to make black and white answers that support our ego and limit the people who put forward possibilities. The real rule should be something along the line of ‘if it hurts no one, why not enjoy the possibility? There are ample evidences that every supposed correct point of view or paradigm is short-lived unless backed by force and some kind of authority that limits rather than supports god and his/her purpose. Then an open-mind obtains new insight and finds the templates of reality even in exploring what first appears to be utterly absurd. I admit I often have found the idea of creationism absurd, and yet as I said at the start of this entry I am now on the side of creationists through evolutionary forces with intentional creative inputs in the Intelligent Design or Interventionist mode. The next entry will seem absurd to most people and few will think it deserves inclusion in a segment purporting to have anything to do with science. I must include it in honest presentation despite the ridicule most people will attribute to it, and me.

    EXORCISMS: – No, I don’t believe it has anything to do with devils and those who project such evil images and intents. These people are the ones who claim only they can exorcize the very devils they manufacture, in the hallucinatory and delusional or vulnerable people they treat. by Aldous Huxley exposes these Catholic masters of the art of deception. That doesn’t mean there are no spirits or dimensional entities with consciousness. To say such a thing would fly in the face of all the science we have presented. The soul would have no immortality as the Keltic Creed and Mandukya Upanishads that Eugene Wigner thinks explains quantum reality tells us is real. To deny such phenomena is the kind of thing reductionists in love with logic and certain of their omniscience will assure us they know. How can shamans create herbal concoctions that chemists can’t create? How can we doubt the actual results of the ‘dowsers’ and Tesla’s great achievements from visions or his ‘non-force info packets’ which allow such ‘free energy’ to be manufactured in something called a vacuum. NASA assures us the ingredients of life are ‘everywhere’ and that could even include a vacuum. What kind of avoidance of fact or ‘easy answers’ do you have to find in order to explain away reality and what you can observe with your own eyes? You would have to attribute the construction of ‘henges’ or the Nazca Lines to aliens or gods!

    We don’t reject these possibilities but they would only serve to enhance the probability of spirits that can possess our physical and complex body with all of its conscious atoms and coordinated centers of energy known as chakras. The science and medicine of the ancients assures us that these things exist and these scientists have a solid track record of performance. They DO the things others can’t explain – then they explain how ‘chhi’ or Shakti is in every part of everything in the universe, and have suffered the guffaws of know-it-alls who are usually wrong. This energy with consciousness is open to direction and will avail the trapped or confused soul without awareness and unwilling to go on with life, an opportunity to hang on as ghosts or in the bodies of those they have shared life with. Sorry to disappoint the authors of ‘Darwinism Evolving’ but I knew this was fact even before 500 watts were extracted from a vacuum by machines built on the principles of Tesla. Those of us who have first hand knowledge of ‘the waves of the marvellous’ like Bucky Fuller and Einstein need no peer approval from those who deny god, the soul and ESP.

  7. Poetic Terms Explained

    Why do poets use:

    1.Full Rhyme

    The effect is used in humorous and satiric verse. Full rhyme is a rhyme in which the words involved have the last two or more sounds in accord and so the only difference is earlier in the word or line. Full rhyme is sometimes known as strict rhyme.

    2.Half Rhyme

    Half rhyme is a kind of rhyme in which the consonants of the two words sound the same but the vowels differ e.g. buck/back. This is sometimes known as pararhyme.

    3.Internal rhyme

    A correspondence of word-sounds within the line, rather than as in conventional rhyme, at the end of lines.

    4.Assonance

    The reiteration of the same vowel sounds close enough together to be noticed by the ear. It is more aural than alliteration because it is not so visible on the page.

    5.Alliteration

    Alliteration is the repetition of consonants close enough together to be noticed by the ear. It usually appears on stressed syllables.

    6.Consonance

    Broadly, this can mean the overall harmony or concord of sounds. More specifically it includes the correspondence of certain sounds, as for instance in assonance or alliteration.

    7.Enjambment

    Enjambment is the continuation, or run-on, of one line of poetry into the next; that is, the syntax flows through the line-break. This is the opposite of end-stopped lines.

    8.Caesura

    This is the term used to denote the break in a metrical verse line, usually at halfway. It is in effect a pause, but a distinct one that falls at virtually the same point in the series of formal lines.

    9.Simile

    A simile is a basic form of metaphor, in which the comparison is directly conjoined, usually with ‘like’ or ‘as’.

    10.Metaphor

    A metaphor expresses one thing in terms of another by suggesting a likeness between them.

    11.Personification

    Personification is when inanimate objects are given human qualities.

    12.Repetition

    Repetition adds emphasis to a poem. Repeating words also pushes a poem forward and makes the poem flow. If repetition is used in effectively and too often the poem can become boring, it must be constructed.

    13.Stanzas

    A group of lines shaped in the same way, with the lines usually, although not always of the same length. Traditionally they would be rhymed, but not always, especially in the twentieth century. Stanzas can vary greatly in length and structure. They serve the function of segmenting the poem and providing pauses in its progression.
